In a good news story from the holiday period, a supermarket delivery driver who won £3.8m ($4.8m) in the UK National Lottery still showed up for his shift on December 23. Jonny Johnston didn’t want to force someone to pick up the slack if he quit the job just a couple of days before Christmas. He worked at a Tesco supermarket in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

was in disbelief as he checked the ticket beside his wife

It was on a night out with some of his work colleagues that the 45-year-old learned that he had won a prize in the December 16 draw after receiving a notification on his phone. It wasn’t until the following morning that he discovered that it was a big win. He was in disbelief as he checked the ticket beside his wife, initially thinking the prize was £38,000 ($48,346).

Commenting on the surprise, Johnston said: “I passed the phone to Christina for her to check and she was in disbelief too. We both began to think that it was a trick, a scam even.” They double-checked that it was legit with Camelot Group, the company that runs the UK National Lottery.

Johnston has been using the same lottery numbers for two decades and plans to use the winnings to secure the financial future of his family and to go on a vacation. The couple intends to continue working to keep busy and give them a purpose.
