The latest online gambling operator to have its license suspended by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is Stakers Limited. This suspension follows the UKGC launching an investigation into the operator’s activity stemming from a number of unspecified compliance issues.

The UKGC noted that it is conducting this investigation under section 116 from the Gambling Act of 2005. This section states that the commission has the ability to conduct a review of any operator’s operations if it fits certain criteria levels.

Review has commenced

Section 116 (2)(a) has been highlighted by the UKGC. This allows the body to review an operator if it “has reason to suspect that activities may have been carried on in purported reliance on the license but not in accordance with a condition of the license.”

The UKGC also referenced section 116 (2)(c)(i) that says a review of an operator’s license can be launched if this given operator may not be suitable to continue providing licensed activities.

Terms of this suspension

The license suspension came into effect on March 4. Stakers’ services will remain suspended until the review has been concluded. Therefore, no UK-based gamblers can place bets at Stakers.com until further notice.

The UKGC has instructed Stakers to allow customers to access their accounts and withdraw funds from the platform. Stakers also must inform its UK customers of the license suspension and let them know that bets will not be taken for the foreseeable future. New UK customers will also be blocked from signing up for the time being.

About Stakers.com

Stakers operates its online gambling services in the UK market through a Combined Remote Operating License. This allows it to offer real event and virtual betting activities through an online casino. It also has a Malta Gambling Authority (MGA) license, with the company headquartered in Malta.

UKGC clampdown continues

Stakers is the latest gambling operator in the UK market to have its license suspended by the UKGC. This comes as the gambling regulator continues its crackdown on compliance issues. Other operators that have had their licenses suspended recently include MoPlay, Matchbook, and EveryMatrix.
